The area

Aodann sits on the shores of Loch Ewe near the pretty Highland village of Poolewe and a short drive from Gairloch. It is a great location for exploring this western corner of the Highlands.  Some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland can be found here. Loch Maree is often called the most beautiful loch in Scotland and Beinn Eighe was Britain's first nature reserve.  From Aodann you can see many hills and Munros, check out the panorama from the house here.  And when the conditions are right you may see the Northern Lights which can be spectacular.

There is plenty to do within the immediate area:

History of wartime Loch Ewe:  Loch Ewe played a key part in WWII, it was where the Artic Convoys headed out and there is a lovely temporary museum in the school just up the road from Aodann.  There is a project underway to fund a brand new museum.

Walks: there is plenty of walking and lovely beaches to explore.

Local food and drink: There are supermarkets in Ullapool, Dingwall and Inverness. At the time of writing, it isn’t possible to get a super market delivery to the property.  However, we would love it if you shop local as much as possible. In the summer there is a Tuesday market in Poolewe with things like local bread and produce.  The Post Office Stores in Poolewe (closed Sunday) is well stocked. Strath (Gairloch) has a great butcher if you fancy some Highland venison. There is a smokery – Smoked by Ewe – on the opposite side of Loch Ewe. There are numerous other stores within a short drive and some open on Sunday. Buy shellfish – you can’t leave without having had squat lobsters – from Dry Island Shellfish.

Eat out: We are big fans of the Aultbea Hotel which does great bar food or eat in their lovely restaurant with views across Loch Ewe. We also love The Steading in Gairloch for meals or afternoon tea/coffee. The Bridge Café in Poolewe is open day times and run by a lovely Spanish couple so expect food with a Galician influence. In the summer, the school just up the road does smashing homemade cakes a couple of days a week to raise money for the Russian Artic Convoy Museum project.

If you enjoy great food during your stay, please let us know so that we can tell others.

Inverewe Gardens and House are just at the end of Loch. The house has been newly refurbished and there is lots to see in the gardens.
